Archbold's Newtonia is distributed in the south and south-west of Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in spiny Didierea and Euphorbia forests.

Similar to Common Newtonia N. brunneicauda but distinguished by its brown rather than grey back, rufous-tinged breast and grey forehead.

Richard Archbold (1907-1976) was an American zoologist whose father financed his expedition to Madagascar from 1929 to 1931.
