The African Wood-owl is distributed throughout much of Africa south of the Sahara and is probably the commonest owl in the woodlands and forests of this area.. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is nocturnal and feeds mainly on insects but also on reptiles, frogs, small birds and small mammals.
