Aphid (aka Greenfly) |
||||
Monks Eleigh Garden, Suffolk,
England May 2008 Aphids are tiny insects that feed on plants and can be very destructive. There are thousands of different species and I haven't attempted to identify this one. They do come in a variety of different colours and many species feed on only one species of plant. |
||||
They have a variety of
methods of reproduction including laying eggs and giving birth to
live nymphs. They breed at a tremendous rate and one female born
in early spring can have billions of descendants by the end of
the year. Fortunately there are predators such as ladybirds and lacewings which along with their larvae eat hundreds of aphids. There is a page on Wikipedia. |
