The Russet-backed Oropendola is distributed in the Andes from Venezuela to central Bolivia and in the western part of the Amazon Basin. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in a variety of forest and woodland habitats.

Russet-backed Oropendola, Sani Lodge, Sucumbios, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image The taxonomy at the moment (2023) seems somewhat confusing as the species has several sub-species with obvious visual differences and a few vocal differences. These photos are of the nominate sub-species which is generally dull brown with a dark bill and yellow tail feathers. Other sub-species have yellow or greenish bills and are much brighter and paler around the head.
