The Rufous Motmot is distributed from Honduras through Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama to Colombia and Ecuador and, to the east of the Andes in the western part of the Amazon Basin. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in humid forest and mature secondary growth.

Birds to the west of the Andes tend to have racket tails while those on the east slope lack the rackets. They are similar in appearance to Broad-billed Motmot Electron platyrhynchum but are larger with a thinner bill, a smaller black breast spot and bluish primaries.
