The Rufous-capped Spinetail is distributed in south-east Brazil, western Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is found in the undergrowth and edges of the Atlantic Rain Forest and in secondary growth woodland. It is usually associated with bamboo.

The crown is rufous with a buffy border below and there is a dark mask on the cheeks. The throat is pale grey becoming darker on the breast. Upperparts are brown with rufous on the wing-coverts and tail.
