The Rufous-banded Miner is distributed in the Andes from western Bolivia through Chile and Argentina to Patagonia. It is found mainly at between 3,100m and 4,400m but also descends to the coast in the Atacama desert.

Rufous-banded Miner, El Yeso Valley, Chile, January 2007 - click for larger image It is a large, rather pot-bellied miner with a shortish, straight bill.The pale supercilium is more obvious than on many other miners. Underparts are buffy with a whitish throat and cinnamon flanks. The tail is rufous with a black band near the tip.
