The Purple-throated Fruitcrow is distributed from Nicaragua through Central America to Colombia, north-west Ecuador and around the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in the mid-storey and canopy of lowland forest.

Unlike many members of the Cotinga family it is social and noisy and is the only member of the family that breeds cooperatively.
