Pale-billed Araçari, Chontal, Pichincha, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image There is debate (2023) about whether it is a species or merely a sub-species of Collared Araçari Pteroglossus torquatus erythropygius. The South American Classification Committee, EBird and Clements classify it as a sub-species whereas the IOC, Birdlife International and HBW regard it as a species. The sub-species argument rests on a degree of hybridisation between sub-species while the counter-argument points out the narrowness of the hybridisation range.
