The Orange-bellied Euphonia is distributed in much of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru, northern Bolivia and the western part of Amazonia. There is a disjunct population in south-east Brazil from the south of Bahia (where photos 1 to 3 were taken) to Rio de Janeiro. See the distribution map at xeno-canto.

The males are very similar to male Purple-throated Euphonia E. chlorotica. However, it is larger and the yellow is more orange. A better identification mark is pointed out by Rasmus Boegh who says, "it has a crown patch that extends well past the imaginary line over the top of the head between the rear part of the two eyes (in Purple-throated, it only extends to, or very slightly past that line, though it occasionally shows the suggestion of a yellow supercilium that extends somewhat further back)". It also has a different voice.
