The Great Thrush is distributed in the Andes from western Venezuela to western Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in semiopen areas and the borders of forest and woodland mainly between 1,800 and 4,000 metres.

T. f. cocozelus from the Santa Marta mountains shown in photo 3 is the lightest in colour. Photos 1 and 2 from Chingaza near Bogota is the sub-species T. f. gigas while photo 4 from Rio Blanco, Caldas shows T. f. quindio, one of the darker sub-species. Photo 5 is a juvenile.
