Utcubamba Valley, Amazonas, Peru October 2018 The Fasciated Tiger-heron is distributed from Costa Rica through Panama to Venezuela and Colombia then south to Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and northern Argentina. There is a disjunct population in south-east Brazil and north-east Argentina with further populations in west-central Brazil. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. |

It is similar in size and shape to Rufescent Tiger-heron but is generally dark grey as opposed to rufous. They take about 4 years to reach full maturity during which time the barring on the back becomes less distinctive. Photo 3 is of an immature bird. | ||||
