The Black-chested Mountain-tanager is distributed in the Andes from the extreme south-west of Venezuela through Colombia and Ecuador to the extreme north of Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in temperate forest around the treeline mainly between 2,700 and 3,300 metres.
