Black-and-white Hawk-eagle Spizastur melanoleucus |
||||
Serra de Carajás, Pará, Brazil October 2005 The Black-and-white Hawk-eagle is distributed from southern Mexico to Colombia and in South America south to northern Argentina though it seems to be absent from much of western Amazonia. It is found in a variety of forest habitats but seems to prefer being close to rivers as in this case. |

It is a very attractive smallish eagle with white head and underparts, a black mask and crest, yellow eye and orange cere. Although widespread it is relatively uncommon. This was the first record of the species from the Serra de Carajás. |
