Azara's Spinetail is distributed in the Andes of South America from western Venezuela to north-western Argentina. It is usually found at between 1,500 and 3,000 metres though at lower altitudes further south. See the distribution map at NatureServe.

Azara's Spinetail, Otun-Quimbaya, Risaralda, Colombia, April 2012 - click for larger image It is common in forest and woodland borders where it forages for insect prey in the undergrowth usually close to the ground. It is the commonest Spinetail in the Andes.

It can be very vocal, singing at intervals throughout the day. The song is sometimes rendered as "kuh-kweee"
