The Andean Coot is distributed from southern Colombia through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and northern Chile to north-west Argentina. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found mainly at between 2,100 metres and 4,700 metres but it is occasionally seen at the coast in Peru and northern Chile. It prefers lakes and ponds on the altiplano.

Andean Coot, Lauca NP, Chile, February 2007 - click for larger image It is a reasonably large coot though the smallest of the 3 species found on the altiplano. It is blackish with a slightly darker head. There are 3 colour morphs showing variations in bill and frontal shield colours. One morph has a small dark red frontal shield and a yellow bill with a grey tip, another has a white bill with a yellow frontal shield, and the third has a white bill and white frontal shield.
