European Hare, Torres del Paine, Chile, December 2005 - click for larger image The European Hare is distributed in western Europe including the British Isles through to the Middle East and Central Asia. They have been introduced into North America, Australia and South America. They were introduced into Patagonian Chile and Argentina at the end of the 19th century presumably for food and/or sport but, with no natural predators they became a major pest.
European Hare, Torres del Paine, Chile, December 2005 - click for larger image It is larger with longer legs and longer ears than a rabbit. It is also more solitary. When threatened it can run at speeds of up to 70 kph.
