Azara's Agouti (Dasyprocta azarae)

Azara's Agouti is a large rodent found in South America from east-central and south Brazil into Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is found in the Atlantic Rain Forest as well as cerrado and chaco habitats.

Red-rumped Agouti, Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, Brazil, December 2006 - click for larger image Felix Manuel de Azara was a Spanish officer in command of the Paraguayan frontier from 1781 to 1801 as well as being a naturalist. He also has a spinetail (Synallaxis azarae) named after him.
