The Common Firecrest is distributed in west and central Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in deciduous and mixed woods including conifers and this compares to Goldcrest which tend to favour conifers.

Common Firecrest, Navarredonda de Gredos, Castilla y León, Spain, May 2022 - click for larger image It is very small and superficially similar to Goldcrest. But note the prominent white supercilium and the black eyestripe which gives it a more severe look. It also has bright greenish-yellow on the side of the neck.

The song is very high pitched.
