There are two sub-species of Wire-tailed Swallow. The nominate sub-species is distributed in tropical Africa while the sub-species H. s. filifera is distributed in the Indian subcontinent and south-east Asia. It is found in open habitats near water.

Wire-tailed Swallow, Tono Dam, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image It has a rufous cap above black lores and blue-black ear-coverts. Underparts are white with short blue "braces" on either side of the breast. The tail streamers are very thin.
