The White-headed Lapwing is distributed mainly in tropical West and Central Africa with disjunct populations in Tanzania and Mozambique. It is found on and near sandbanks on rivers in open country and in forest and is normally found in pairs or small groups up to 30.

White-headed Lapwing, Tono Dam, Ghana, June 2011 - click for larger image The head and neck are grey with a white band stretching from the forehead to the nape. The bill is yellow with a black tip and large yellow wattles hang from its base. Wings are mainly white but the outer three primaries are black and there is a black square on the coverts. The tail is white with a black terminal band.
