The Madagascar Snipe is endemic to Madagascar where it is found in marshes and swamps on the eastern side of the island up to 2,500 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

It is classified as Vulnerable as the population is estimated at less than 10,000 and is in decline because of the loss of habitat.
