The Collared Nightjar is endemic to the north and east of Madagascar. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found mainly in low primary forest.

A distinguishing feature is the broad rufous collar with thin buffy edge.

Many photos of this species show a male and a female close together in their day roost as is the case with this photo.
